Queensland Smoke Alarm Requirements

Queensland has some of Australia's strictest smoke alarm requirements. The legislation requires all homes to have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms that are hardwired or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery — not the standard 9V replaceable battery type.

Ionisation alarms (the most common type sold in hardware stores) do not meet Queensland's requirements. Only photoelectric alarms are accepted. Getting this wrong can affect insurance claims, rental compliance and the ability to sell your property.

Key points

  • Photoelectric alarms required — not ionisation
  • Hardwired or 10-year sealed battery
  • Interconnected — all alarms sound together
  • Required in every bedroom and connecting hallway
  • Required on every level of the home
  • Compliance certificate issued by licensed electrician

Common Smoke Alarm Problems

Our technicians carry a wide range of spare parts and fix most faults on the spot.

Wrong Alarm Type

Ionisation alarms don't meet QLD law. If you have them installed, you're non-compliant — even if they're new.

Not Interconnected

All alarms must sound together when one detects smoke. Standalone alarms that only sound locally are not compliant.

Replaceable Battery Alarms

Standard 9V battery alarms don't meet the QLD requirement for hardwired or 10-year sealed battery power.

Missing Coverage

Alarms are required in every bedroom, every hallway connecting bedrooms, and on every level. A single alarm in the hallway isn't enough.

Alarm Past Expiry

Smoke alarms have a 10-year lifespan. After that, the sensing chamber degrades and the alarm may not detect smoke reliably.

Rental Compliance

From January 2022, all rental properties in Queensland must be fully compliant. Non-compliant properties can't be legally leased.

Queensland Smoke Alarm Compliance Dates

Queensland law requires all homes to have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms that are hardwired or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery. The rollout is staged:

1 January 2017

New Homes

New builds and substantial renovations must comply from this date.

1 January 2022

Rentals & New Leases

All rental properties and any new lease agreements must be fully compliant.

1 January 2027

All Homes

Every home in Queensland must have compliant smoke alarms by this date.

Non-compliance can affect your ability to rent, sell, or make an insurance claim after a fire.
