Every BYD EV and PHEV sold in Australia charges via a Type 2 (IEC 62196) socket for home and AC charging. This is the seven-pin connector standard used across Europe and Australia — the same connector your wall charger plugs into. A Type 2 wall charger installed at your home replaces the slow portable unit supplied with your BYD and delivers significantly faster, more reliable overnight charging.
The correct circuit size depends on your model. The Atto 3 and Dolphin have 6.6kW onboard chargers and need a standard 7kW single-phase dedicated circuit. The Seal, Sealion 6, Sealion 7, and Shark 6 have 11kW onboard chargers — they charge at up to 7.2kW on single-phase, or the full 11kW if your property has 3-phase supply. We assess your switchboard and cable route during the quote at no extra charge.

The Atto 3's supplied portable 'Mode 2' charger plugs into a standard 10A household point and delivers around 2.4kW — roughly 10–15km of range per hour. On the 60.5kWh extended range battery, a full charge from empty takes over 20 hours. A dedicated 7kW Type 2 wall charger reduces that to under 9 hours and adds 40km of range per hour. No more coming home to an Atto 3 that isn't ready.
The Dolphin's 44.9kWh or 60.5kWh battery charges overnight on 7kW — but the supplied portable charger runs on shared household circuits. When another appliance draws current on the same circuit, the safety switch trips mid-charge. A dedicated Type 2 circuit on its own breaker and RCBO eliminates this permanently and keeps your Dolphin charged without interruption.
The Seal has an 11kW 3-phase onboard charger — one of the fastest AC charging rates of any EV in its class. On the supplied portable, it charges at 2.4kW. On a 7kW single-phase wall charger, it charges at 7.2kW, fully recharging the 61.4kWh or 82.56kWh battery in 8–11 hours. If your property has 3-phase supply, a 3-phase 11kW charger adds up to 75km/hr and charges the Seal in under 8 hours.
The Sealion 6 PHEV carries 18.3kWh of battery for approximately 85km of pure EV driving. To run primarily on electricity rather than petrol, the battery needs to fully recharge every night — ideally during off-peak tariff hours. On the portable charger that takes 7–8 hours and usually trips household circuits. A dedicated 7kW wall charger with charge scheduling achieves a full recharge in under 3 hours.
The Sealion 7's 71.8kWh or 82.56kWh battery is among the largest of any SUV in Australia. On the portable granny charger, a full charge from empty takes over 30 hours — effectively unusable as a daily charger. A 7kW dedicated wall charger brings that down to 10–12 hours overnight. For Sealion 7 owners with 3-phase supply, an 11kW installation reduces it further to under 8 hours.
The Shark 6 PHEV ute carries a 33.8kWh battery for up to 100km of electric range — enough for most Brisbane workdays on electricity alone. On the portable charger, a full recharge takes 14+ hours, longer than a typical overnight window. A 7kW Type 2 wall charger installed at the garage or carport fully recharges the Shark 6 in under 5 hours, so it's ready every morning.
All BYD EVs and PHEVs — Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Sealion 6, Sealion 7, Shark 6 — use the same Type 2 connector. One installation works with any BYD now and any future BYD you purchase.
Most Brisbane homes run on single-phase supply and suit a 7kW Type 2 charger. For the Seal or Sealion 7 on properties with 3-phase, a 3-phase 11kW unit unlocks the full onboard charging speed. We advise on the right option during the quote.
Adding a 7kW EV charger requires a spare circuit at your switchboard. We assess your switchboard capacity and cable route during the on-site assessment and advise whether an upgrade is needed before you commit.
All BYD charger installations are carried out by Queensland-licensed electrical contractors. A Certificate of Test (Form 4) is issued on completion for your insurance records and for disclosure at future property sales.

A new dedicated circuit is run from your switchboard to the charger location, correctly sized for the charger's output and protected by its own breaker.
A Type A RCBO is installed on the EV charger circuit, providing both overcurrent and residual current protection as required for EV charging under Australian wiring standards.
Standard installations include up to 15 metres of cable from switchboard to charger. Additional cable runs are quoted separately and confirmed upfront.
A lockable isolation switch is installed adjacent to the charger for safe de-energisation during servicing or in an emergency.
A Certificate of Test (Form 4) is issued on completion, providing documentation for your insurance records and required disclosure at future property sales.
