Why Upgrade From Your Portable Charger?

Most EVs come with a portable 'granny flat' charger that plugs into a standard 10A power point. At 2.4kW, that's roughly 10–15km of range per hour — meaning a full charge from empty can take 24 hours or more.

A dedicated 7kW wall-mounted EV charger gives you 40–50km of range per hour on a single-phase supply, cutting your overnight charge time to 8–10 hours for most vehicles. For homes with 3-phase power and a capable EV, a 22kW charger can add up to 120km per hour.

Key points

  • ✓7kW single-phase: 40–50km of range per hour
  • ✓22kW 3-phase: up to 120km of range per hour
  • ✓Dedicated circuit — won't trip your other appliances
  • ✓Solar compatible — charge on surplus solar with a smart charger
  • ✓Type 2 connector — works with all major EV brands
  • ✓Smart scheduling — charge on off-peak rates overnight

Common Problems With Home EV Charging

Our technicians carry a wide range of spare parts and fix most faults on the spot.

Granny Flat Charger Is Too Slow

Your portable 2.4kW charger adds only 10–15km of range per hour. After a busy day you'll regularly go to bed without a full charge — and wait all weekend to top up from empty.

Sharing With Other Appliances

Running a 10A portable charger on a shared household circuit trips safety switches when appliances run simultaneously. A dedicated circuit solves this permanently.

No Solar Integration

Standard chargers draw power from the grid regardless of what your solar system is generating. A smart charger like the Zappi can divert surplus solar to your car instead of exporting it at low feed-in rates.

Charging Outside in the Rain

Portable chargers are not designed for permanent outdoor use. A wall-mounted IP-rated EV charger eliminates trailing leads and is rated for outdoor installation year-round.

No Scheduling or App Control

Without a smart charger you can't schedule off-peak charging, track energy use, or set charging limits. Smart chargers give you full visibility and control via app.

Switchboard Not EV-Ready

Older switchboards with ceramic fuses or limited spare capacity may need an upgrade before an EV charger can be safely installed. We assess this during your quote at no extra cost.

Benefits of a Dedicated Home EV Charger

40–50km of Range Per Hour

A 7kW single-phase wall charger adds 40–50km of range every hour — enough to fully charge most EVs overnight from almost empty.

Dedicated Circuit

Your EV gets its own protected circuit from the switchboard. No tripping other appliances, no sharing load — just reliable, consistent charging every night.

Solar Export Diversion

Smart chargers like the Zappi divert surplus solar energy to your car instead of exporting it back to the grid at a low feed-in tariff.

Off-Peak Scheduling

Schedule charging to start at midnight or whenever your off-peak electricity rate kicks in — and wake up to a full battery without any thought.

Weather-Rated & Permanent

IP-rated for outdoor installation. No extension leads, no temporary setups — a permanently installed, safety-certified charging point on your wall.

All Brands Supplied & Installed

Zappi, Fronius, Evnex, Wallbox, Tesla Wall Connector, Fox ESS, Ocular — we supply and install all major brands at competitive prices.

Installation Pricing Explained

How much does an EV charger installation cost?

There isn't one price that suits every home. A charger beside a modern switchboard with a short cable route is a very different job from one across a two-storey home, underground, or on a detached garage.

Before recommending anything, we look at how you actually want to charge and what your home's electrical system can safely support.

How far is the charger from your switchboard?

The further the charger sits from the switchboard, the more cable, containment and installation time the job can take.

  • Ceiling spaces and wall cavities
  • External walls and conduit
  • Garages and detached buildings
  • Underground sections
  • Multiple levels

Distance isn't only measured in metres. We also work out how the cable can physically and compliantly reach the charger. Two identical chargers — one beside the board, one twenty metres away — can be very different installations.

The charger may be the same. The installation around it may not be.

Is there accessible ceiling space?

Where the proposed cable route runs through your ceiling, safe and practical access to that space matters.

  • Roof construction and low clearance
  • Insulation and framing
  • Ducted air conditioning in the way
  • Sections that simply can't be reached

A manhole doesn't mean every part of the roof space is reachable. If the required area can't be accessed safely, another compliant route is used instead — external conduit, surface containment, a different internal path or underground. That changes both time and cost.

Can your switchboard support the charger?

A dedicated EV charger becomes one of the larger electrical loads in a home, so the existing board has to be assessed first.

  • Available electrical capacity
  • Existing household loads
  • Switchboard condition and spare space
  • Existing protection and supply arrangement

Some installations are straightforward. Others need additional switchboard space, changes to protective devices, alterations, load management or a supply upgrade. We assess what's there before deciding.

We don't connect a large new load and hope for the best.

Do you need 7kW, 11kW or 22kW charging?

Bigger isn't automatically better — the speed you can actually use depends on several things working together.

  • Single-phase or three-phase supply
  • The charger itself
  • Your vehicle's onboard AC charging limit
  • Available capacity at the property
  • How much driving you actually do

A charger labelled 22kW does not mean every vehicle will charge at 22kW — most are limited by what the car itself accepts. A well-chosen charger suits both the property and the car.

We help you find the speed you can actually use, not the biggest number.

Do you want to charge from the sun?

If you already have solar, the cheapest charger isn't necessarily the right one for how you want to charge.

  • Prioritise excess solar
  • Grid or off-peak charging
  • A mix of solar and grid
  • Scheduled charging

Compatible solar-smart chargers monitor household usage and solar generation, then adjust charging to suit. Depending on the charger, that can need extra equipment — CT monitoring, an energy meter, a gateway or data cabling — which affects the final price.

What if your home doesn't have much spare capacity?

Limited spare capacity doesn't automatically mean a major upgrade is the only option.

  • Spare capacity changes through the day
  • Oven, air conditioning and hot water all draw on it
  • Compatible systems can adjust the charging rate to match

A load-management system monitors how much electricity the property is using and adjusts EV charging to the capacity available. As household demand drops, more can become available for the car. Depending on the property and equipment, this may provide a practical solution without oversizing the installation.

It may reduce what's needed — it doesn't always remove the need for an upgrade.

A compliant installation is more than mounting a charger on the wall

The electrical work has to be designed for the actual charger, property and cable route.

  • Dedicated circuit and circuit protection
  • Residual-current protection
  • Conductor selection and isolation
  • Installation method and switchboard capacity
  • Commissioning, and applicable network requirements

Two 7kW installations don't automatically need identical cabling. Cable selection is part of the electrical design — length, voltage drop, installation method, grouping, environment and the manufacturer's own requirements all feed into it.

We select the cable for the installation, not the cheapest one that fits.

Every charger has its own installation requirements

Tesla, Zappi, Wallbox, SolarEdge and ChargePoint units don't all install the same way.

  • Protective devices and supply
  • Conductor sizing and RCD type
  • Metering, monitoring and communications
  • Mounting, commissioning and configuration

Manufacturer instructions can specify requirements that differ between brands and even between models. We check the requirements for the charger actually being installed rather than assuming every charger is wired the same way.

We follow the requirements of your charger — not how another brand was done.

How would you like to charge?

Pick the one closest to how you'd use it. Nothing is submitted — this just shows what tends to matter for that choice.

A solar-smart charger can prioritise surplus generation instead of exporting it. Depending on the charger this needs monitoring equipment, so it's worth deciding early rather than retrofitting later.

Charging speed depends on your supply, the charger and what your vehicle accepts — whichever is lowest sets the pace. Worth checking your car's onboard limit before paying for a faster charger.

Most chargers can be scheduled to run in a set window. If your tariff has a cheaper overnight rate, a standard charger on a timer may be all you need.

Some chargers blend surplus solar with grid top-up so the car is ready by morning without waiting on the weather. This depends on the charger's own capability.

That's the common answer, and it's fine. We look at your vehicle, your supply, your switchboard and how much you actually drive, then recommend something that suits — not the most expensive option.
