Smart EV Charger Installation Brisbane

A smart EV charger goes well beyond simply plugging in your car. Unlike basic wall boxes that draw from the grid at a flat rate, a smart charger connects to your Wi-Fi or OCPP platform — giving you app control, scheduled off-peak charging, real-time solar diversion and, in select models, bidirectional V2H (vehicle-to-home) capability. What Makes an EV Charger 'Smart'?

A smart EV charger is a connected EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) that communicates with your home network, solar inverter or energy management system. Using the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP), smart chargers can report session data, accept remote commands and integrate with third-party energy platforms — making them far more flexible than fixed-rate basic chargers.

The most valuable feature for homeowners with solar panels is solar diversion: the charger detects surplus energy being exported to the grid and redirects it to charge your EV instead. Combined with off-peak scheduling and V2H bidirectional capability on supported models, a smart charger can dramatically reduce your net charging cost over time.

Key points

  • App control from your phone — start, stop, schedule remotely
  • OCPP compatible — open protocol for platform integration
  • Solar diversion — charge on surplus solar instead of exporting
  • Off-peak scheduling — automatically charge at lowest tariff
  • V2H / V2G bidirectional — export energy back to home or grid
  • Energy monitoring — cost and usage tracked per session

Problems a Smart Charger Solves

Our technicians carry a wide range of spare parts and fix most faults on the spot.

Charging at Peak Rates Without Scheduling

A basic charger starts drawing from the grid the moment you plug in — even at 6pm peak rates. A smart charger can be set to delay charging until your off-peak window, automatically cutting your energy cost per charge.

Exporting Solar at Low Feed-In Tariff Instead of Charging Your EV

Queensland feed-in tariffs often sit at 5–10c/kWh. If your solar is exporting while your EV charges from the grid at 25–30c/kWh, you're paying a significant premium for energy you're already generating.

No Visibility of Charging Cost

Standard chargers give you no data — no per-session cost, no energy breakdown, no CO₂ tracking. Smart chargers log every session and surface the data in an app so you know exactly what your EV costs to run.

Basic Charger Cannot Integrate With Solar Inverter

Without OCPP or a CT sensor interface, a basic charger has no way to know what your solar is generating. A smart charger with solar diversion constantly monitors generation and adjusts charge rate in real time.

No Remote Start or Stop

Basic chargers start and stop when you physically plug and unplug. Smart chargers let you pause a charge remotely, delay start from your phone or trigger charging via automation — useful when you're away from home.

Future V2H Not Possible With a Basic Charger

Bidirectional V2H (vehicle-to-home) requires a charger with bidirectional hardware and OCPP support. Fitting a basic charger now means a full replacement later if you want V2H capability as the technology matures in Australia.

Benefits of Installing a Smart EV Charger

Solar Diversion Saves Money

By charging on surplus solar rather than exporting it at a low feed-in tariff, smart solar diversion can substantially reduce your net charging cost on days with good solar generation.

Off-Peak Scheduling

Set your charger to begin automatically during your cheapest tariff window — overnight or shoulder periods — without needing to remember to plug in at a specific time.

App Monitoring and Remote Control

Start, pause or stop a charge from anywhere. View real-time charge rate, session energy delivered, estimated cost and historical data — all from your smartphone.

OCPP Integration

OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) lets your charger work with home energy management systems, solar inverter platforms and fleet management software — not just the manufacturer's own app.

V2H Ready

Select smart chargers support bidirectional charging — drawing energy from your EV battery to power your home during an outage or peak period. This requires a compatible vehicle and inverter, but the charger hardware must support it from day one.

Energy Data Per Session

Every charging session is logged with kWh delivered, estimated cost and solar vs grid split. Use this data to track your EV running cost accurately and report for novated lease or business use.

What's Included in Your Installation

1

Smart EV Charger — Supply & Install

We supply and install your chosen smart charger — wall mounting, cable routing, commissioning and app setup. Fixed price provided upfront before work begins.

2

Dedicated Circuit

A dedicated circuit is run from your switchboard to the charger location, correctly sized for the charger's output and your supply capacity.

3

RCBO Protection

A dedicated RCBO is fitted in your switchboard for both overcurrent and earth leakage protection — compliant with Australian EV charger wiring requirements.

4

Cable Run Up to 15m

Up to 15 metres of conduit and cable included in the standard price. Longer runs or complex routing are quoted separately and confirmed before work begins.

5

Solar CT Sensor Setup (If Required)

If your chosen smart charger includes solar diversion, we install and configure the CT (current transformer) sensor on your solar generation cable so the charger can detect surplus and divert it to your EV.

6

QLD Electrical Certificate

A Certificate of Test (Form 4) is issued on completion — required for your insurance records and any future electrical work or solar upgrade on the property.
